best life

I haven’t felt inclined to blog in the last week, but hopefully I’ll get back up to speed in the next few days. Meanwhile, here’s something to keep you amused (click to see the full image).

A picture is certainly worth a thousand diatribes…

hymns, hymns

Strange things make me happy. For example, the fact that an 1897 copy of the Kirchen-Gesangbuch Fur Evangelisch-Lutherische Gemeinden (Church-Songbook for Evangelical Lutheran Worship) published by Concordia (ie, Missouri Synod) should be appearing in my mailbox in the next couple of weeks. Admittedly, it’s for a paper and ultimately for my thesis, but aside [...]

berroco beatrice

Spurred on by Elise’s various knitting projects, I am starting a crocheted shrug. This one.
It’s pretty (well, not the colors–think white with green trim instead) and it looked relatively simple to construct until I started a gauge swatch and came to Grief at the end of Row 2. It remains to be seen whether I [...]

Lenten prayer

O God, early in the morning I cry to you.
Help me to pray
And to concentrate my thoughts on you:
I cannot do this alone.
In me there is darkness,
But with you there is light;

it’s picnic weather in tempe!

Hands-down the best way to spend a Sunday afternoon—on a blanket in the grass under the warm sun with wine, cheese, salad, and good friends. Glorious. Salad concoction is below:
Spring Picnic Salad

2 grapefruit
2 Asian pears
1 bunch of spinach
1/2 cup mint leaves
Vinaigrette–Mix olive oil, champagne vinegar, lemon juice, salt, and minced shallot to taste

Tear the [...]

abstaining for Lent

I used to dislike coffee intensely. Now I like it, in moderation and extremely doctored. Today I invested in a tiny French coffee press, just the size for someone who likes a little coffee with my milk. I’ve given up coffee-on-the-go from Starbucks/Gold Bar/Extreme Bean/Steve’s/insert-coffee-shop-of-choice here for Lent and hopefully forever, as it’s a [...]

theatrical pianism

The NY Times just published a great article about excessive drama in piano performance. Seriously, I’ve had this experience on more than one occasion. Sometimes the musical experience is worthwhile but the pianist’s gymnastics are entirely too painful to watch. The word is ‘distracting’.
Bernard Holland does a nice job of summing up “the differences between [...]

happiness is…

…spending time with dear E who shares an independent, can-do-it-all, opinionated, and sassy personality, but who, in total contrast to appearances, would not mind (nay, enjoys) staying at home and being domestic. Not because we’re the conservative sort, mind, but because it would be Fun. Staying home is not an option for either of [...]

travel is broadening

This is apparently the year for globe-trotting. Trips to look forward to:
1) March—spring break road trip to California with E.
2) May—two weeks in Japan with dad
3) August—two weeks in Europe (Albania, Austria, Germany, and France) with mom and brother
