I’m leading a couple of church forums (ULC’s version of adult Sunday School) on the topic of worship in a few weeks. As evidence that the meanings of words change over time, I offer the title of a hymn found in the American Lutheran Hymnal (1930)—Before Jehovah’s Awful Throne. One of the perks of being a piano teacher–watching your six-year-old student try to say the word “staccato” without his two front teeth. Priceless.

I generally avoid the whole piano performance scene because I still remember how stressful it felt to be under so much pressure. The whole business still makes me recoil inside, even two years after my last semester as a piano major. However, I do try to be supportive of my pianist friends, so I ventured [...]

I listened to Chanticleer’s lovely rendition of Purcell’s “Rejoice in the Lord Alway” on the way home from choir practice tonight, parking at my apartment and letting the song finish before I got out of my car. Meanwhile, Dude With No Shirt who lives across the street from me passed by with his buddy, rolling [...]
