years gone by

Time and tide wait for no man, but concurrently, the more things change, the more they stay the same. This time of year is always filled with meeting old friends and catching up on months and years spent living separate lives, but it is especially delightful to meet up with friends you never expected [...]

doing church in a new way

Being around infrequently-seen family members during the holidays always makes me realize anew how much I’ve changed in the last few years, particularly in regard to faith. Explaining the foreign concepts of Lutheran liturgy and observance of the church year to my conservative evangelical relatives is quite a challenge because most of them haven’t had [...]

grace upon grace

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… In him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace [...]

veni veni emmanuel

E’s post about Christmas got me thinking. This is probably the first Christmas that I haven’t really paid attention to. friends that stick closer

Said before, but worth repeating–nothing in the world comes close to the value of dear, good friends who rescue me from hiding when I have had a particularly heinous couple of days, nay, weeks. E with her mochas and fabulous hugs and A with her shopping distraction and common sense…you gals have been my sanity [...]

priceless

Favorite moment during the children’s Christmas pagent at church this morning–Mary and Joseph having a tug-of-war over the manger. Joseph won.
Also, the cow (complete with pink wings, which she apparently insisted on), stating clearly as she was led unwillingly to the front of the chuch, “But I don’t want to be a cow!”

’tis the season…

…for remixing classic Christmas songs. Maybe the combination of mind-numbing percussion and Bing Crosby compels some people to buy, buy, buy! but frankly, it makes me want to leave, asap! Oh, the horror. Poor Billie Holiday. I hope you’re not turning in your grave, wherever you are.
